Origi's Champions League Wonders

Writer: Will OakleyWill Oakley

Divock Origi has always been one of those players that's around the bench, never quite got into the starting XI. However the 18/19 Champions League did get him a bit of a reputation...

It all started off with the "impossible comeback". Liverpool were 3-0 down on aggregate after Barcelona thumped them at the Camp Nou but, as we know, Liverpool definitely weren't down and out. Origi opened the scoring after Henderson's saved shot fell right into Origi's path. Liverpool now had one back, but it still looked unlikely. However a Wijnaldum double really changed the game to make it 3-3 on aggregate. 72 minutes after Origi opened the scoring, the famous "corner taken quickly" took place. The ball came rushing into Origi and, of course, he powered it past Ter Stegen and the ball hit the back of the net. Origi's wonders got Liverpool into the Champions League final, and the story only gets better.

Whilst the final may not have been as action packed as the semi final, Origi still played a part. Both teams weren't really on their game on the day of the final, but Liverpool did eventually come out on top. Salah opened the scoring with a penalty early on, and Origi finished the game off with a goal in the 87th minute. A nice finish took it straight past Lloris into the far corner. The thing that makes Origi's story so much better is that he's never really broken into the Liverpool team, and suddenly he breaks through and puts in a few world class performances. The 18/19 Champions League campaign showed what Origi is really about, he now has a bit of a reputation.
